Name: Han Solo
Canon: Star Wars
Canon Point: after being frozen in carbonite during The Empire Strikes Back.
Age: about thirty

History: that wasn't my fault!

Personality:

You had to admire someone with that kind of conviction, Solo thought. Either that or avoid him at all costs, and it was clearly far too late to do that.

If you asked Han, he'd probably tell you he's only in this for the money, but it's a well-known fact that Han Solo is frequently full of it.

At one point it was true. Prior to the events of A New Hope, Han really was only concerned with himself, his Wookiee best friend, and his ship. (Not necessarily in that order.) He made his living smuggling drugs and other contraband for a crime lord-- not a glamorous career but it afforded him a certain independence, which wouldn't have been the case with a legitimate job under the Imperial regime. Someone so contrary and arrogant didn't have much future in a system which prized obedience. The criminal underworld also appealed to his affinity for danger; if the constant threat of Imperial patrols and rival gangs wasn't enough, he was also a reckless pilot, pushing his ship to its mechanical limits and charting courses no sane man would risk.

But the downside to a life of self-interest is that when things go sour, there aren't many people to help you get back up on your feet. Han Solo was a pretty terrible friend, and other than Chewbacca (who owed him a life debt) most of his friendships were tenuous at best. It wasn't that people didn't like him-- charming and sarcastic, he did pretty well-- but Han wasn't the sort of man to inspire much trust, he definitely wasn't the guy you'd look to when you were in a pinch. And likewise, you wouldn't go out of your way to help him. When he took on the old Jedi and the farmboy as passengers it was an act of mutual desperation: they needed the transportation, he needed the money.

However, it turns out Han is a better man than he wants people to think. Though he continues to insist he's only in it for the reward, he sticks around. Helping rescue Leia, joining the battle at Yavin-- it starts to get personal. That naive farmboy becomes one of his closest friends (Han is the only one who'll risk his own life to save him on Hoth); he falls for the stuck-up princess (who definitely likes him even if she's giving him mixed signals); his secret soft spot for lost causes leads him to sympathize with the Rebels. Facing the brutality of the Empire in battle makes it a lot harder to ignore, and instead of just worrying about his own freedom he finds himself fighting for others'. By the start of Episode V, Han is a surprisingly respectable guy. He passes up numerous chances to leave, and only makes a break for it when the price on his head starts to make him a liability. In spite of his constant occasional complaining, it's really not about the money anymore.

That said, all those lofty goals haven't changed him that much. He's still cocky and willful, likelier to shoot first than take the diplomatic route. Luckily, when you're trying to overthrow a corrupt totalitarian government, they usually call it "bravery" instead of recklessness. He's got a temper, but he's starting to be better at suppressing it. The biggest thing is he's got people he cares about now, and he would do anything for them... and in turn, he trusts them to do right by him, too.

The last thing he did at this canon point was hop on the noble self-sacrifice bandwagon: faced with the reality of his situation Han allowed himself to be taken with minimal resistance, telling Chewbacca not to fight because he realized that letting Vader give him to Boba Fett was the only thing he could do that might buy his friends some safety. It turns out he's a pretty reliable scoundrel when it comes down to it.

Abilities/Skills: Han is an excellent shot, a very good pilot, a talented card player, great at fine-tuning a starship, and a decent liar. (Sometimes.) He has no supernatural abilities, unless you want to count dumb luck.

Strengths/Weaknesses: Aside from the skills above:

STRENGTHS:
a quick thinker; brave in a fight; loyal to the people he cares for (though not indiscriminately so); pretty good hair for a non-Force user.

WEAKNESSES
reckless; cocky; impatient; pessimistic; kind of a loudmouth; not nearly as good as he thinks he is at talking his way out of situations.

Items: Boots, pants, presumably whatever sort of underwear one wears in outer space, shirt, belt. He's leaving the giant brick of carbonite behind, fortunately.

SAMPLES
Network Sample:

I've been from one end of the galaxy to the other a couple times over, but not as a passenger.

[He's also not used to having to specify which galaxy. Han looks deeply annoyed and sounds kind of offended.]

A big ship like this, you don't get any feel for it, anyway. I don't know a lot about the engines on it but it doesn't make a lot of difference, some things don't change. She's fast, maybe, but you have to sacrifice maneuverability with this much bulk. There's too much of it for one person. Me, I want to know every inch of what I'm flying.

Makes it easier to fix it when something goes wrong.

[Which is usually... hourly? Give or take.]

So is there anyone who's been here a while who can tell me about this ship? I'm not expecting a point five hyperdrive or anything but I'm guessing we can translate.

[And that means he can start figuring out how to tweak it, right? Right.]
